Understanding the Different eBay Auction Formats
Buying and selling on eBay can be lots of fun, however it can also be quite confusing if you’re not used to it or know little about it. A good place to start is to get a good understanding of the different eBay auction formats, and that’s what we’re going to look at in this article…
Overview
In short there are three main formats – auction listings, buy-it-now, and classified ads. eBay also used to allow people to place ‘dutch’ auctions, however these have now been phased out due to lack of popularity.
Auction Format
This is the traditional format and the one which made eBay popular in the first place. You have a starting bid (this can be anything that the seller chooses) and then the auction runs for a set number of days and people bid against each other over the duration of the auction. The person who bids the highest amount wins the auction – it’s as simple as that. Some items will also have a ‘reserve price’, and if the bidding doesn’t reach the set amount then the item doesn’t sell to anyone.
Buy-it-now
This format has become increasingly popular in recent years. Basically it allows you to buy an item at a set, fixed price. You’ll see this offered as an option on auction listings, as well as buy-it-now only listings. The advantage with this is that you don’t have to wait for the auction to end if you see an item you want a price which you think is reasonable. Click the button and it’s yours!
Classified ads
These work a little differently and it has the drawback that you can’t take advantage of the eBay feedback system. Classified ads simply connect buyers with sellers – the actual business is done outside of eBay. It can however be a good way to find certain kinds of items.
